The position is strategic: it guarded the nearby Smolyan fortress and controlled the roads through the Rhodopes down to the Aegean.
Excavations found two periods of use — an early one in the sixth century and a later one from the eleventh to the thirteenth. The chapel foundations in the southern part confirm the dating.
